Short curls dry faster than long ones with a diffuser, but they also show an uneven cut the moment they spring up. That is why I cut curly hair dry, one curl at a time, and why shape matters more than product. These short curly hairstyles run from 2C curls to 4C coils.
1. Pixie for Curly Hair

For 3B to 4A curls on an oval or heart-shaped face, a curly pixie is the shortest of all short curly hairstyles and the fastest to style in the morning. Styling is curl cream and a light gel on soaking-wet hair, then air-drying or a diffuser. I cut it dry, one curl at a time, keeping the sides tight and leaving two to three inches of curl on top. Every 6–8 weeks it needs reshaping to keep the height.
2. Chin-Length Bob for Curls
For medium-density 3A to 3C curls, a chin-length curly bob is one of the short curly haircuts I am asked for most often. Styling is leave-in and gel on wet hair, diffused with your head tilted, then the cast scrunched out once dry. I cut it dry so I can see where every curl sits, and shape the perimeter with a slight round. A dry cut every 10–12 weeks keeps it in shape.
3. Short Shag for Curls
For medium to thick 2C to 3C curls, a short curly shag sets short layers at the crown and longer ones at the nape so the curls stack upward rather than outward. Styling is a wash-and-go with curl cream and gel, then a diffuser. I cut it dry and point-cut weight away from the sides. Since the layers grow out well, 8–10 weeks between cuts suits most clients.
4. Curly Bob With a Fringe
For 2C to 3B curls on an oval or long face, a curly bob with bangs works as long as the fringe is cut longer than expected, because curls spring up an inch or more once dry. Styling starts with the bangs diffused first with gel so they set in place, then the rest. I cut the bangs and the bob dry. Trim the bangs every 4–6 weeks and the bob every 8–10.
5. Wolf Cut on Short Curls
For medium to thick 2C to 3B curls and anyone who wants a relaxed look, a short curly wolf cut pairs heavy layers on top with wispy curls at the nape. Styling is curl cream and mousse scrunched in, then air-drying. I cut it dry and remove bulk at the sides by point cutting. It is one of the more casual short curly hairstyles. Trim every 6–8 weeks so the layers stay separate.
6. Curly Taper Cut
For 3C to 4B hair on a round or square face, a tapered curly cut adds height that lengthens the face shape, with the sides and nape clippered short and longer curls left on top. Styling is leave-in and gel on wet hair, with finger coils through the top for more definition. I shape the top dry. The taper needs cleaning up every 4–6 weeks.
7. Undercut Pixie for Curls
For thick 3A to 3C curls, a curly undercut pixie clippers the sides or nape short and leaves the curls longer on top, which removes the bulk so the shape stays narrow. Styling is curl cream and a strong gel through the top, then air-drying. Clean up the undercut every 3–4 weeks and have the curls reshaped every 6–8.

8. Curly Bob, Rounded
For medium to thick 3B to 4A curls on an oval face, a rounded curly bob is cut into a soft circle around the head and shows off an even curl pattern. Styling is leave-in and gel, then a diffuser with a bowl technique. I cut it dry and blend the back and sides into one curve. Reshape every 8–10 weeks.
9. Shoulder-Length Cut for Curls
For 2C to 3C curls of any density, a shoulder-length curly cut is the longest of the short curly hairstyles and offers the most ways to wear it: down, in a half-up puff, or pineappled at night. I cut layers dry through the crown so the curls do not settle into a triangle. Trim every 10–12 weeks.
10. Mullet for Curly Hair
For medium to thick 2C to 3B curls and anyone after an edgier look, a curly mullet keeps short curls at the front and crown with longer curls at the back. Styling is curl cream scrunched in and air-drying. I cut it dry and blend the sides so no hard line shows. Among short curly hairstyles it is one of the edgiest. Trim every 6–8 weeks to keep the front short.
11. Curly Curtain Bangs on Short Hair
For 2C to 3B curls on a chin or shoulder-length cut, curly curtain bangs part at the center and frame the face, which softens the whole short curly cut. Styling is the bangs diffused first with a light gel and pushed out to the sides. I cut them dry so they land at the cheekbones when curled. Trim the bangs every 4–6 weeks.
12. Asymmetric Bob for Curls
For medium-density 3A to 3C curls, and for balancing a round or square face, an asymmetrical curly bob runs one or two inches longer on one side, and the curls make that uneven line softer than it is on straight hair. Styling is leave-in and gel, then a diffuser with the heavy side tilted down. I cut it dry with a deep side part. Reshape every 8 weeks.
13. Stacked Bob for Curls
For 3A to 3C curls, and for women over 40 who want a polished short curly cut, a stacked curly bob graduates the nape short so the curls build height at the back. Styling is a diffuser with your head tilted forward for lift at the crown. I graduate the back and cut the front longer, at the chin. Trim every 6–8 weeks.
14. Bixie With Curls
For fine to medium 2C to 3B curls, a curly bixie sits between a bob and a pixie at about ear length, with the curls longer at the front. Styling is mousse scrunched in and a diffuser. I cut it dry and point-cut weight away from the sides. Of all the short curly hairstyles, it grows out about the easiest. Trim every 6–8 weeks.
15. TWA for Coily Hair
For 4A to 4C hair, a teeny weeny afro, or TWA, is usually the first cut after a big chop. Styling is a leave-in and a curl cream on wet hair, defined with a curl sponge or finger coils. I shape it evenly around the head with shears, keeping one to two inches all over. Shape it every 4–6 weeks as it grows.
16. Taper for Coily Hair
For 4A to 4C hair, a tapered coily cut keeps the sides and nape close and leaves fuller coils on top for height. Styling is leave-in, curl cream and gel for definition, finished with a curl sponge. I taper with clippers and shape the top with shears. Few short curly hairstyles need less maintenance. Clean up the taper every 4–6 weeks.
17. Finger-Coiled Short Hair
For 4A to 4C hair, finger coils give short coily hair defined, separated spirals that last four to five days. Styling is leave-in and gel on small sections of wet hair, each wrapped around a finger, then left alone until fully dry. I shape the cut dry first so the coils fall evenly. Reshape the cut every 6–8 weeks.
18. Short Hair Twist-Out
For 4A to 4C hair between two and five inches long, a short twist-out stretches coily hair into soft, defined waves. Styling is twisting damp hair with a twisting cream, letting it dry fully, then unraveling and fluffing the roots; it lasts three to five days. I cut the shape first so the twists fall evenly once unraveled. Reshape every 8 weeks.
19. Short Wash-and-Go Style
For 3C to 4B hair, a short wash-and-go is the simplest routine curly and coily hair can have: leave-in and gel on soaking-wet hair, then air-dry or diffuse on low. I cut the shape dry so the curls sit where they fall, and clients leave them there. On day two, refresh with water and a little gel. Reshape every 8 weeks.
20. Curly Frohawk Cut
For 3C to 4C hair and anyone wanting one of the boldest short curly hairstyles, a curly frohawk keeps the length down the center of the head with the sides short or tucked. Styling is leave-in and gel on the top, picked up at the roots. I taper the sides and shape the top dry. Clean up the sides every 4 weeks.
21. Perm for Short Curls
For fine to medium straight hair, and for women over 40 who want volume, a perm adds curl and opens short curly hairstyles to clients without natural curl. Styling is mousse scrunched in and a diffuser. I cut the shape first, then perm on medium rods for loose curls. Perms last 3–4 months. Trim every 8 weeks.
22. Curly Pixie for the Over-50s
For women over 50 with 2C to 3B curls, including hair that has turned coarser with age, a curly pixie is one of the most flattering short curly hairstyles. Styling is a curl cream and a diffuser. I cut it dry, keep the sides close and leave longer curls on top for height. Trim every 6 weeks, and touch up color every 6.
23. Gray Curly Bob for the Over-60s
For women over 60 with 2C to 3B gray curls, which are often coarser and frizzier than before, a gray curly bob stays defined with a moisturizing leave-in. Styling is a diffuser on low, with a purple shampoo once a week and a gray-friendly gloss every 8 weeks to soften yellow tones. I cut it dry to the chin. Trim every 8 weeks.
24. Short Curly Shag for the Over-50s
For women over 50 with fine to medium 2C to 3B curls, a short curly shag covers thinning at the crown with layered curls on top. Styling is mousse scrunched in and a diffuser with your head tilted forward. I cut it dry with a curly fringe. Few short curly hairstyles are easier to style at home. Trim every 6–8 weeks.
25. Bob for 2C Curls
For fine to medium 2C hair, which sits between waves and curls with S-shaped curls that frizz easily, a short bob with internal layers lets the curls form rather than lie flat. Styling is mousse scrunched into wet hair, a diffuser on low, then the cast scrunched out, with a lightweight leave-in so the curls stay light. I cut it just below the chin. Trim every 8 weeks.
Short curls dry faster than long ones with a diffuser, but they also show an uneven cut the moment they shrink, so I cut them dry. IMO, lifting at the crown is what sells the shape. For the longer-face takes, the oval face haircuts guide has the rest.
